The Continental Divide

So my friend and I are having a late dinner/early morning breakfast over at the Lyons near SFO last weekend. It's pretty empty, except for one table, couple of thuggish-ruggish fellows-corn rows, speaking in hard slang, you know the type. While we were there, two of them start arguing..over something...a girl, someone disrespected, whatever...their conversation got heated, but it didn't get carried away. Then three caucasian folks walk in and get seated. I watch them scan the room, and see the nervous stares already. Probably more because the ghetto boyz are still at it, and if they didn't acknowledge to us that they mighta been rude with their debate, I probably would've been nervous too. All this time, I'm watching the white folks, they're whispering to each other, looking at the ghetto boys, sometimes joking, sometimes not. And then, of course another group walks in, and they're all black. They're seated, and I glance over to the white folks, and I see more nervous stares. The waiter goes to their table, leaves and comes back with plastic bags. Several minutes later, the waiter comes back with their food, packed to go, and places it in the plastic bags. As they leave, I give one of them a stare, that God-you-people-are-ridiculous-get-over-yourselves stare.

Without stating the obvious, they didn't leave because the service was bad. It's 2004. The 21st century. If you're still having problems with people who are "different," maybe it's not them, but you.

Ok, off the soapbox.

Flamed Out

Yep, that's pretty much what happened to the Sharks. Calgary is having some shark fin soup right about now, and all of Canada is rejoicing, because they have a team in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Did anyone see Jermaine Dye make a fabulous diving catch against Le Tigres last night? Oh man, I didn't know a 6'5" guy can lay out like that. Fully extended, both feet off the ground, he catches an Alex Sanchez line drive that probably would've been a triple had he missed. Way to go, JD!
